Understanding Ukraine-gate - Part 1 - Why Was Hunter Biden Hired?

(to sit on the board of Burisima Holdings, the largest fracking company in Ukraine)

Understanding what happened in Ukraine is a very important story re the 2020 presidential elections. However, I have discovered it is a very difficult story to tell, especially to the typical American who has not been already following along closely. No judgement from me on any such persons, not so long ago, that person was me. I've come to see Ukraine as almost the perfect metaphor for what the fuck is wrong with our country, namely that both political parties are full of individuals who are out to line their own pockets rather than striving to pass legislation that is honestly aimed at improving the general welfare of "we the people".
Let me state for the record that I am no fan of Trump, who is using and abusing the office of President in order to pursue his own personal interests. He is so obvious and inelegant about it, though, so it is fairly easy to spot. Unfortunately, when it comes to abuse of political power for one's own personal gain, the maneuverings of similar politicians who have little D's at the end of their names are much more difficult to recognize. Many of them present a false facade of "fighting for Democratic values", and some are even able to tell bald-faced lies with such self-assurance and panache that bystanders walk away convinced that they have heard nothing but the truth. These politicians talk the talk, but do not walk the walk. Joe Biden is an excellent example. His actual record frequently does not match what he claims he has accomplished. For example, Joe asserts that there is no evidence that he or his son did anything wrong with respect to Ukraine. I respectfully disagree. In fact, there are even YouTube videos of Joe actually BRAGGING about his misdeeds there! The man has incredible chutzpah.
My goal here is to provide evidence that ** you can review for yourself **, so you can see that certain claims Joe has made simply are not true. Politics is often a game of distraction: "Look HERE, not THERE!". We voters are suckered into looking only at the sins of one candidate, while the sins of another remain un-examined. We need to get smart, we need to ensure that we are asking the right questions. IMHO, the questions that we as concerned voters need to focus on most with respect to Ukraine-gate are these:

1. Why was Hunter Biden Hired?

2. Why was "the Prosecutor" Fired?

3. Why are the Democrats Pursuing Impeachment Against Trump?

As there is much material on each of these topics, I am breaking the information into multiple parts. Part 1 is dedicated to evidence related to the question, Why was Hunter Biden hired to sit on the board of Burisima Holdings, the largest fracking company in Ukraine? At the bottom of this post are links to news items related to this topic.

CHEAT SHEET / SUMMARY

Here are some of the items that have affected my conclusions, which iare:
  • Hunter was hired by a company, Burisima Holdings, which was owned by an oligarch who was under investigation for corruption.
  • Hunter was hired because he was the son of the Vice President of the United States, and was paid a handsome salary in order to gain influence over Joe Biden.
  • The investment paid off for the oligarch, at least initially, when Joe Biden threatened to withhold US aid to Ukraine unless the prosecutor who was running the investigation into Burisima was fired (evidence for that conclusion will be provided in Part 2, "Why was 'the Prosecutor' Fired?") Joe got what he demanded - the prosecutor WAS fired.
Not only did it LOOK bad, it WAS bad: Joe Biden abused his power of office to interfere with the justice department of another country, in a manner that benefited his son, Hunter Biden.

Feb 18-23, 2014 Wikipedia Ukrainians rise up to overthrow their corrupt (but fairly elected) president, Viktor Yanukovych (for reasons. Note: there is compelling evidence that thiis "revolution" may have actually been a "U.S. backed coup", but let's keep things simple and not even go there right now, kk?).
Keep in mind that at this point Ukraine is a struggling democracy
Apr 23, 2014 huffpost.com Joe "Champion of the Climate Crisis" Biden visits Ukraine to pitch FRACKING and "energy independence" as the U.S. endorsed solution to Ukraine's problems. Because any child can tell you that the thing that a struggling democracy needs the very most is FRACKING! "During his two-day visit this week to Kiev, Ukraine, Vice President Joe Biden unfurled President Barack Obama‘s 'U.S. Crisis Support Package for Ukraine.'" "The U.S. oil and gas industry has long lobbied to “weaponize” its fracking prowess to fend off Russian global gas market dominance. It’s done so primarily in two ways. One way: by transforming the U.S. State Department into a global promoter of fracking via its Unconventional Gas Technical Engagement Program (formerly the Global Shale Gas Initiative), which is a key, albeit less talked about, part of President Obama’s “Climate Action Plan.” The other way: by exporting U.S. fracked gas to the global market, namely EU countries currently heavily dependent on Russia’s gas spigot."
Reminder: Biden was an emissary FOR OBAMA in 2014. OBAMA's STATE DEPARTMENT was "a global promoter of fracking", in order to keep America safe from Russia!
May 2014 thefederalist.com One month after Joe's visit, Hunter joins the board of the biggest fracking company in Ukraine -> Burisma Holdings.
May 2014 thefederalist.com Who else joined Burisima at this time? Devon Archer, a wealthy investor, top Democratic campaign bundler, and close family friend of Secretary of State John Kerry.
Question: does this look like Dem insiders moving to make $$$ when FRACKING takes off in Ukraine? Joe says that Hunter was hired because of his qualifications, not because he was the VP's son. Question: is that why Devon Archer was hired too?
May 13, 2014 thefederalist.com "The most disturbing explanation is that the company is attempting to curry favor with the U.S. government by enlisting the services of the close family friend and campaign bundler of the Secretary of the State and the son of the vice president."
August 5, 2014 nakedcapitalism.com "Michael Hudson reports in a Real News Network interview that the commercial and geopolitical logic behind the Biden role, and the bigger US and World Bank/IMF program, is to push fracking onto a decidedly unreceptive population in Eastern Ukraine."
Oct 16, 2014 wsj.com "WASHINGTON—Vice President Joe Biden’s son Hunter was discharged from the Navy Reserve this year after testing positive for cocaine, according to people familiar with the matter."
Question: Would YOU hire a cocaine addict with no experience in your industry to sit on the board of YOUR company?
Dec 12, 2015 NYT Editorial Board "Sadly, the credibility of Mr. Biden’s message may be undermined by the association of his son with a Ukrainian natural-gas company, Burisma Holdings, which is owned by a former government official suspected of corrupt practices. A spokesman for the son, Hunter Biden, argues that he joined the board of Burisma to strengthen its corporate governance. That may be so. But Burisma’s owner, Mykola Zlochevsky, has been under investigation in Britain and in Ukraine. It should be plain to Hunter Biden that any connection with a Ukrainian oligarch damages his father’s efforts to help Ukraine. This is not a board he should be sitting on."
Question: suppose you are a fabulously wealthy oligarch who is suspected of corruption. Would you think that hiring, for a princely sum, a down-on-his-luck son of a very important politician might be a great idea and give you a certain "friend in high places"?
May 5, 2019 dailycaller.com "Hunter Biden was appointed to the board of directors of a Ukranian company as part of an effort to recruit well-connected Americans while the company was under investigation, according to The New York Times."
May 13, 2019 zerohedge.com "Schweizer, the author of Clinton Cash and now Secret Empires discovered that in 2013, then-Vice President Biden and his son Hunter flew together to China on Air Force Two - and two weeks later, Hunter's firm inked a private equity deal for $1 billion with a subsidiary of the Chinese government's Bank of China, which expanded to $1.5 billion, according to an article by Schweizer's in the New York Post.""Perhaps most damning in terms of timing and optics, just twelve days after Hunter and Joe Biden flew on Air Force Two to Beijing, Hunter's company signed a "historic deal with the Bank of China," described by Schweizer as "the state-owned financial behemoth often used as a tool of the Chinese government." To accommodate the deal, the Bank of China created a unique type of investment fund called Bohai Harvest RST (BHR). According to BHR, Rosemont Seneca Partners is a founding partner."

At the end of 2015, Joe Biden spoke before the Ukrainian parliament. In what might appear to be a surreal episode of the Twilight Zone, Joe actually “warn[ed] Ukrainian legislators to waste no more time in rooting out corruption” and spoke out against the power of a tiny group of oligarchs, who own about 85 percent of Ukraine's gross domestic product. The NYT editorial board pointed out that the owner of Burisma "has been under investigation," and that Hunter's association with him "damages his father’s efforts to help Ukraine."
“Sadly, the credibility of Mr. 2019.07.03 20:27 AllegoricalSleeping READ: This week's blog is a mask for a more serious problem

TL;DR at the bottom!
To the devs and the community: My goal here is to explain my perspective as a veteran scaper and to encourage you to poll us about whether we want these partnerships before polling us about which rewards we would be interested in when partnerships arise.

This week's blog update is sparking a lot of negative feedback. The long term players of this game (the OG 2007-scapers) remember the decline of RuneScape as we knew it. I'm sure each one of us could indicate a specific moment in time when we decided enough was enough and let it go. One of my gripes was when the bank on top of Lumbridge castle was added. I know, that's silly and in OSRS as well, but kid-me liked feeling like one of the cool kids for having started Recipe for Disaster and gaining access to the bank chest. Little things like that, "QoL updates." They picked at me but I kept playing until the EoC, when I couldn't take it anymore. I share this just to bring you in to my perspective, and hopefully to help you see where my opinion stems from.

We are being asked in the polls about the superficial consequences of partnerships but not about the partnerships directly. We have not seen feedback from past partnerships (such as whether they were good for the community and how, the rise of the bots, and other statistics) and we are getting very little specific information about how long exclusive items will be exclusive or how these masked micro transactions will work. Our official feedback is limited to what they put in the polls. Voting "No" for these suggestions only tells the company that we want them to come up with other ideas; it doesn't tell them that we see through the facade. These are micro-transactions under a different name.

Everyone here knows Settled. Swamp man good. If you think about it, though, why is he so likable? He's transparent. Transparency is the key to the success of this game. On Settled's YouTube Community tab, you'll see just 4 months ago he polled his fans to see if it was ok with us if he took a sponsor. He didn't come out and say, "Meet Swampletics, sponsored by Kate Hudson's Fabletics sportswear for women. Buy her products to see my videos before everyone else can, though they will eventually be available to everyone."
But Settled isn't the point today.

The current poll feels like a sham; it's enough to say there was democracy behind it, but we aren't able to vote on the most important thing: Should we be offered rewards, cosmetic or otherwise, in return for paying real money? It feels like Jagex is taking the "easier to ask for forgiveness than permission" route, but is underestimating us by trying to bait us with cosmetic rewards. Have the higher ups forgotten/do they not know that a solid chunk of the player base are people who played when they were kids, but are now adults? That we remember when MTX killed the original game?

I know the mods are the messengers, not the ones making these decisions, so I hope none of you will feel attacked by this post. You have all done so much to return this game to us and I am grateful to have my favorite childhood game back. I am also honestly impressed that Jagex HQ hasn't fallen to partnership and MTX pressure (for OSRS) before this, despite brand new video games coming out that despite paying full price, still have full commercial advertisements in them and pay-more-to-play features. (Battlefront, anyone? FIFA?). Comparatively, these cosmetic rewards are minor, but those who witnessed the fall of RS3 from the beginning know this is exactly how it started.

MTX is a trigger word around here. OSRS is an escape from it and veteran RS players have been burned by it before. It's a sensitive issue. Please, Jagex, tread carefully.

TL;DR: This week's poll does not ask us if we're okay with these partnership rewards and exclusive content for real-world money. It asks us which rewards and exclusive content we'd be willing to pay for when they partner with other companies. Polling the community, which is a distinguishing feature of OSRS, misses the point if we're being told, "we're doing this thing that you are against, but do you want grey skin while we do it?" I ask that Jagex give us more information about the specific details and what they plan to do with these "partnerships," how they intend to retain the influx of new players who are led to believe this game is about instant gratification, how they'll keep the bots away, and more. Let us weigh in on the real issues, and please don't try to pacify us with superficial, meaningless polls while claiming it's still democracy. Be transparent with us.

2019.06.06 21:27 holyguacamole823 I am 26 years old make $67,000, live in Central New Jersey and work as a Director of Design in Solar.

Section One: Assets and Debt
Retirement Balance: $2,200 in an old 401k from my previous employer. They did not have a company match. I was laid off 2 years ago when the company closed and have not rolled over the plan to a new account. My new employer does not offer a retirement plan, which is the biggest negative of my current job, and I have been avoiding the subject all together because, ADULTING!
Equity: $60,000, split in half. My significant other, B. and I purchased a home together last summer. We split the down payment, each putting down $5%. Equity has not grown far past the down payment because we've been paying almost all interest in the first year. I had previously purchased a Co-op unit, so my equity from that paid for my half of the down payment. I purchased that unit with a small inheritance from when my father passed away in 2014. My S/O lived at home for longer which is how he saved for his half.
Savings account balance: $60,000, $45k parked in an online HYSA and $15k in a regular SA attached directly to my brick and mortar checking.
Checking account balance: $1k-2,500
Credit card debt: >$400, mostly frivolous purchases that I don't feel like paying cash for or that I want to earn rewards on, like hotels, amazon, etc.
Student loan debt: $5,700 balance @ $95/mo. Graduated with a $10,000 balance. I got a ton of financial aid, but also worked part time while living at home during college. The $10,000 in loans is what this did not cover! I earned my Bachelor in Science, concentration in Public Health.
My S/O and I currently do not combine finances. We split most things in half that are shared bills, but I try to pay a little bit more for food, entertainment, groceries, etc. because I am earning more at the moment.
Section Two: Income
Main Job Monthly Take Home: $3,370
Side Gig Monthly Take Home $0-1,500. I am a freelance AutoCAD and Revit Designer. I work on architectural design for all sorts of clients, whether they are renovating homes, building commercial spaces like restaurants, etc. The income is super un-predictable, so I have included $5,000 per year in the salary in the title.
Section Three: Expenses
Rent / Mortgage: $1,015 for my half of the mortgage. BUT here's the caveat: We have a roommate! Her rent is $650 plus utilities. We split her payment. I did not include this in my income since it is kind of a grey area?
Retirement contribution $0
Savings contribution $0-400
Investment contribution $0

*Disclaimer* I wrote this back in March and submitted to R29. It has not been chosen because I think I skimped a bit on the details BUT *takes deep breath* here it is!
Sunday 3/31 Day One
7AM – Didn’t stay out late or drink last night but when I wake up this morning, I am totally not feeling the gym. I get out of bed to feed our kitties but go lay back down. I roll over and cuddle with my partner, who I’ll call B, for a while before starting the day.
8AM – Weather is super gross and gloomy which is why I can’t get motivated. B. and I make some coffee and share some toaster strudels for breakfast. I lounge around and poke through my Thug Kitchen cookbook for some recipe inspo. I’ve been feeling like I need more veggies in my life.
10AM – I force myself to do some light meal prep before we go grocery shopping and to use up some stray ingredients hanging around in the fridge. I decide on a peanut noodle dish with kale and purple carrots inspired by the Thug Kitchen recipe, but of course with my own spin. We had all the ingredients in the fridge and pantry. It makes 3 portions which I split into containers.
12PM – Off to Aldi for our weekly haul. After making the peanut noodle dish, there isn’t much food around the house, so I plan on it being a bigger trip. I am buying this week since B. bought groceries last week.
12:30PM – Our cart is getting dangerously full, so I force us over to checkout. Avocados, leafy greens, lemons, asparagus, ground turkey, salmon, a hunky rib-eye steak, chicken breast, various frozen veggies, two types of hummus, snacks, toilet paper, plastic wrap, pantry items, and more. Total is $113.42. That’s a lot for Aldi, but we got sooo much stuff. I make a loose promise that I won’t spend any additional money on food til next Saturday, earliest.
4:30PM – Off to Brooklyn! B. is in a band and has a show at a Mexican barestaurant in Bushwick. We take my car, so he offers to get dinner. I have no idea what the tolls come to, but my EZPass is pre-paid every other month, so I won’t count those towards the daily total. We decided on Roberta’s for dinner because we’ve seen it on the Pizza Show and are in the mood for dope pizza.
6:30PM – Wait time is an hour for Roberta’s but we hack it and order takeout from their storefront next door. We eat it in my car (LOL) and then go back into the bar and hang with his band-mates. He pays for the pizza and gets drink tickets for being in the band. Score!
12AM – Home from Brooklyn and pass out the minute my head hits the pillow. Work in the AM!
Daily Total: $113.42
Monday 4/1 Day Two
7:30AM – Time to get ready for work. Breakfast is a bagel from Aldi with Irish butter and coffee. B. made the coffee and I made the bagels. I grab one of my peanut noodle meal preps and head out the door.
9AM – I am in two back to back meetings until 11:30AM. I hate Monday meetings.
11:30AM – I am hungry already so dive into my noodles directly after those treacherous meetings. I ambitiously brought my gym clothes, but now that I’ve eaten, it’s all out of order. I get an hour for lunch, so I will usually sneak out around 11AM before eating, get a quick workout in, and then return to the office and eat at my desk. Oh well, maybe tomorrow.
3PM – I watch the Case Against Adnan Syed on HBO GO while I work on a proposal to put solar on four Group Homes. Its straight forward enough but tedious, so while I design the sites, I listen/watch the last episode on my other screen.
5:30PM – Home! I throw salmon and asparagus together on a sheet tray. I shudder for a moment thinking about warm weather around the corner. I love throwing dinners all together on a sheet tray because its so easy and quick. But when its hot out I never want to use the oven. We also have an older home that B. and I purchased together at the end of last summer. It currently does not have central A/C. We made it for the one month of hot weather we were in the house last summer, so I think we’ll survive. Adapt and overcome, right?
6PM – A contractor swings by to quote us on some work we’re having done on the house. Specifically, we have a dilapidated detached garage on our property that we want to take down so our small yard would be significantly bigger. He quotes $1,000 for the labor and then another $600-800 for the dumpsters.
8PM – B. has another show, at a local bar this time, but I elect to stay in. I lounge around and then eventually go upstairs and Google how to grow sprouts and microgreens for way too long. I eventually nod off.
Daily Total: $0
Tuesday 4/2 Day Three
7:30AM – Wake up, get dressed, the usual. Make some iced coffee from leftovers that I keep in a jar in the fridge. I bought us a fancy Cuisinart drip pot around Christmas, and every time we make a pot we almost always have leftovers. I’m frugal and hate wasting things, so now we have iced coffee in the fridge always.
8:30AM – I have a hard-boiled egg and some fruit and yogurt at my desk. I take a call from one of our PPA (Power Purchase Agreement) Partners and go over an RFP (Request for Proposal) we are working on.
10AM – Why am I hungry already?! I continue to slurp more coffee and make myself wait for lunch.
12PM – Peanut noodles again, which I warm up in the office microwave this time. I usually like a dish like that cold, but its surprisingly better warmed!
1PM – B. and his mom and I are going into NYC for the night. (New York twice in a week! I swear that isn’t a normal thing, just coincidence). She got us tickets to see Live with Kelly and Ryan, which she has always wanted to do, so we agreed to go with her. I booked us a hotel room since you must be at their studio by 7:15AM and we didn’t want to leave home 4:30AM. I booked the hotel a while ago, but we still need a garage spot for the night. I use Spot Hero and book it. $30
7PM – We make it to Manhattan and park the car. We find a cute diner to eat at somewhere in Midtown & B’s mom treats. We walk to the hotel, check in, watch a bit of TV and fall asleep.
Daily Total: $30
Wednesday 4/3 Day Four
6:30AM – Wake up and make a dash for the Live with Kelly & Ryan studio to get in line by 7:15AM. We check out and there’s an additional $40 resort fee at the hotel. I hate fine print! $40
7:15AM – We get in line and I’m miserable because I haven’t had coffee. Once we get settled in line and figure out what’s happening, I jump out of line and go across the street to a food cart and get us bagels, coffee, and juice. $10
8:15AM – Still waiting, so I go get another coffee. $1.50.
9AM – We’re in! We stay for both the live taping and pre-recorded taping directly after. It was pretty neat, although famous people are VERY full of themselves. Their vibe is just a whole other thing. Guests among the 2 shows included Kate Hudson and Gwendoline Christie from GoT. She was VERY tall. Overall it’s a success and we leave hungry again.
12PM – We stop for lunch at a corner deli. We don’t order THAT much, and it comes to $60!!!! B’s mom treats again since we drove and got the hotel. So glad I don’t live here. Time to go home!
3PM – B and I nap a bit after we get home. I wake up some amount of time later and warm the last of my peanut noodle leftovers while working on a freelance CAD project. I take it easy for the rest of the night.
Daily Total: $51.50
Thursday 4/4 Day Five
7:30AM – Back to work today! Taking a day off in the middle of the week is weird. I make a pour over this morning since I don’t feel like making a full pot, and I eat a leftover apple turnover that B’s mom bought at the overpriced deli in NYC. I make a salad to bring for lunch.
9:30AM – Work is insane. Apparently there were several fires while I was out yesterday, and I spend most of the morning tending to them. While I don’t *like* doing this kind of thing, it makes me feel needed and confident in my role.
12:30PM – Still super busy at work, so I eat my salad at my desk.
5:30PM – Absolutely exhausted from the day, so I decide not to bring my laptop home and work on my freelance client. I let the client know it had to be pushed and thankfully he was understanding.
6:30PM – I reverse sear the ribeye we bought in our weekly haul at Aldi and make frozen French fries. Just as good as $25 plate of Pomme Frites!
9:30PM – Relax all night and then bed!
Daily Total: $0
Friday 4/6 Day Six
7:45AM – Whoops! I overslept a bit. B has a small cold and I think my body is fighting it, so I slept like a rock and needed it. No time for coffee or breakfast. I have yogurt in the fridge at work and decide to stop at Wawa for a coffee. $1.75
12PM – It’s Friday and I’ve been going into the office. I used to work from home on Friday’s but our company has been going through some major growing pains and I’ve been needed in the office most days. So I decide to treat myself to this really good pizzeria who has a $5 2 slice and a can of soda lunch special. I recruit my coworker and we eat lunch together. $5
5PM – Fish tacos are for dinner. I’m trying to do the whole meatless Friday for lent thing for my mom. I stop at Aldi for the rest of the ingredients: limes, jalapenos, tomatoes, cilantro, refried and some snacks for later. B. and I are going to see Pet Semetary. $11.32 God, Aldi is so cheap!
8PM – B. buys our movie tickets and I bring the snacks. Naturally, all of the previews are for other horror movies and I’m on edge by the time the movie starts! It’s really scary but awesome. They changed parts from the book but in an oddly good way.
Daily Total: $18.07
Saturday 4/7 Day Seven
8AM – I wake up before B. so I decide to sneak downstairs and brew a pot so I can finish my freelance project. The client contacted me this morning and paid me via Venmo before I even emailed him the finals. He is too good to be true.
10AM – B. and I go to Home Depot to get some spring flowers to decorate our stairs with and a new mailbox. We use the last of the gift cards we had accumulated from family after moving in. I offer to buy the rest. $27.81.
12 PM – Roomie is having brunch with a bunch of mutual friends. She invited us but we declined since I was working on the freelance project and then Home Depot. I text her to tell them to come over later and have a game night. They say yes, woohoo!
3PM – B. hangs the new mailbox while I put the flowers in cute pots I have lying around. Our porch looks so cute!
4PM – I have a surprise 80th birthday party for my great aunt to attend. I pick up my mom and we go together. I danced with my family to the live band, drank free miller lites, and the dinner was good to boot!
9PM – Friends start arriving. I run out to the liquor store to grab some beer for everyone. We play games til a bit after midnight and then wrap up for the night and say our goodbyes. $17.56
Daily Total: $45.37
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Food + Drink $160.55
Home + Health $27.81
Clothes + Beauty $0 (Shockingly! I have a huge shoe problem, which I am working on!)
Transport $0 (Also surprising, I am wondering if I missed a gas fill-up?)
Travel $70

2019.04.09 22:13 hard2nvrmind The National to play Milwaukee’s Summerfest and very informative and interesting article on the I Am Easy project

The below information discovered on the Summerfest site:
Featherless Ideas We Would Hand Back and Forth to Each Other
On September 3, 2017, Mike Mills emailed Matt Berninger to introduce himself and in very short order, the most ambitious project of The National’s nearly 20-year career was born and plans for a hard-earned vacation died. The Los Angeles-based filmmaker was coming off his third feature, 20th Century Women, and was interested in working with the band on... something. A video maybe. Berninger, already a fan of Mills’ films, not only agreed to collaborate, he essentially handed over the keys to the band’s creative process.
The result is I Am Easy to Find, a 24-minute film by Mills starring Alicia Vikander, and I Am Easy to Find, a 68-minute album by The National. The former is not the video for the latter; the latter is not the soundtrack to the former. The two projects are, as Mills calls them, “Playfully hostile siblings that love to steal from each other” -- they share music and words and DNA and impulses and a vision about what it means to be human in 2019, but don’t necessarily need one another. The movie was composed like a piece of music; the music was assembled like a film, by a film director. The front-man and natural focal point was deliberately and dramatically side-staged in favor of a variety of female voices, nearly all of whom have long been in the group’s orbit. It is unlike anything either artist has ever attempted and also totally in line with how they’ve created for much of their careers. It’s complicated. And also kind of not.
“The National is not five dudes,” Berninger says, putting the lie to the photograph accompanying this press kit. “That's kind of been the core, but the truth is, very quickly with Boxer, Carin started writing. Kyle and Ben, who are our brass section, they became very much creative partners, and then Thomas Bartlett, Sufjan Stevens -- the doors have been wide open in terms of people coming in. It’s a big community.”
Carin is Carin Besser, Berninger’s wife, who saw her lyric-writing duties increase, but the most drastic change this time was that, for the first time, an outside collaborator has been credited as a creative producer for an entire project. “What felt new was to have an outsider in the middle of the creative process, giving a lot of feedback,” says songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer Aaron Dessner. Traditionally he would be the band member charged with assembling a National album’s sundry pieces, and Long Pond, his studio in upstate New York, had become the de facto home base for a band whose members are now scattered across New York, Ohio, California, and France. “He wasn't producing in a traditional sense, it's more like he's been an interrupter -- a subversive force in the middle of everything, and kind of questioning and suggesting and subverting our normal process.”
When Mills first reached out to Berninger, The National’s seventh album, Sleep Well Beast, was just coming out, and the band was embarking on a long stint of touring and headlining festivals. “So we talk on the phone, and I was expecting to do a video, and Matt's like, ‘Well we've got all these songs, why don't we do an album, like a film for all the songs,’” Mills recalls. “From the get-go he was like, ‘You can do anything you want,’ which was super generous but very daunting. I don't know shit about music, so it was really interesting that they were so game.”
Berninger gave Mills a handful of tracks from the Sleep Well Beast sessions, including what would become “Light Years,” “The Pull of You, and “Quiet Light,” as well as “Rylan,” which dated back a decade. There were no conditions as to what Mills could or not do with the tracks, and he quickly landed on an idea that would be perfect for Vikander and wrote a script with her in mind. The film, which was shot in March 2018, is nothing more and nothing less than an intimate look at one person’s life from birth to (spoiler alert) death, a picaresque succession of subtitled snapshots and fleeting moments big and small that add up to a life -- existential bullet points.
“I often play around with condensing a huge thing into a small thing, playing out a telescoping of time,” Mills says. “My favorite art pieces do that. So why not a portrait of someone’s whole life, and Alicia’s so good she could play the whole thing without any aging prosthetics. I grew up with very powerful sisters and a mom, and a gay dad -- I grew up in a matriarchy. I'm used to trying to figure out women, so it's much easier for me to write a female character than a male character.”
The further along Mills got, the clearer it became to all involved that more songs would be needed; likewise, the band found themselves newly inspired the more they saw what he was doing and how opening up their process felt liberating. “In filmmaking there is a really broad and inclusive space where artists can really work together in a collaborative way,” says multi-instrumentalist and composer Bryce Dessner. “And so in a way the language Mike was speaking dovetailed pretty quickly with how we functioned.”
They wrote and recorded while on tour as they always have. When Berninger sings in a hushed, plaintive voice, there is a very strong chance that’s because the song was written, or even recorded, in a hotel room in Europe somewhere, or within earshot of a sleeping family. But now they were handing these parts to Mills directly to do with as he wished -- moving or even removing them at will. The guitars that had filled “Where Is Her Head” were taken out almost entirely, as were the drums that once anchored “Hey Rosey.” When the tour for Sleep Well Beast ended in October 2018, instead of settling into the customary sanity-preserving year off, The National instead continued writing and recording in earnest.
And they had plenty of reinforcements. “It’s a movie about a woman,” says Bryce Dessner, “so shouldn’t there be women’s voices? We're a band that's been largely defined by the sound of one person's voice where suddenly now we're hearing others.”
As the album’s opening track, “You Had Your Soul with You,” unfurls, it’s so far, so National: a digitally manipulated guitar line, skittering drums, Berninger’s familiar baritone, mounting tension. Then around the 2:15 mark, the true nature of I Am Easy to Find announces itself: The racket subsides, strings swell, and the voice of longtime David Bowie bandmate Gail Ann Dorsey booms out -- not as background vocals, not as a hook, but to take over the song. Elsewhere it’s Irish singer-songwriter Lisa Hannigan or Eve Owen, or Sharon Van Etten, or Mina Tindle or Kate Stables of This is the Kit, or varying combinations of them. The Brooklyn Youth Choir, whom Bryce Dessner had worked with before. There are choral arrangements and strings on nearly every track, largely put together by Bryce in Paris -- not a negation of the band’s dramatic tendencies, but a redistribution of them. “It's stuff we've never done before,” says drummer Bryan Devendorf. “It’s a step outside the rah-rah-rah.”
The presence of female voices isn’t meant to give equal time along gender lines in an effort to express allyship or explore the band’s feminine side or parrot Vikander’s character’s inner life so much as it is meant to reinforce the idea that this isn’t about any one particular person at all. And it was important from the outset that this not feel like a woman’s vantage point as portrayed by men. “I trusted the hands we were in,” says Besser, “and when I saw what Mike was doing, I thought, well, one of the things art does is show us how to look at each other. Also, the compression, that way of squeezing so much into a shorter space, plus the sort of list of events, to me is really emphasizing the universality.”
“Yes, there are a lot of women singing on this, but it wasn't because, ‘Oh, let's have more women's voices,’ says Berninger. “It was more, ‘Let's have more of a fabric of people's identities.’ It would have been better to have had other male singers, but my ego wouldn't let that happen.”
Beyond the roster of singers, the music itself is emblematic of an expanded worldview. “We're known for being a band that makes songs that build up to this big ta-da and then go away,” says bassist Scott Devendorf. “Making it more fluid and open-ended and not this grand statement all the time, there's more intricacies and more space in the music. To me, it’s not more feminine in any way necessarily, but about having a different perspective and not just having guitars chug along.”
The track that may most closely mirror Mills’ film in structure and substance is its sparsest and arguably most personal. “Not in Kansas” showcases Berninger hushed and in repose, reciting objects in his peripheral vision and flashes of memories -- not exactly stream of consciousness but a list of art and artists and loved ones that may seem minor or scattershot on their own but together comprise a whole life of experience and curiosity. (Berninger claims the original version he handed to Mills contained lyrics about almost everyone he’s ever known, including his massage therapist and an Uber driver). And while it is certainly autobiographical -- the book on artist Hanne Darboven was in his bedroom, he really was going through an R.E.M. and Roberta Flack phase, his dad really did suffer a spiral fracture while ice skating -- the reflection is part and parcel with both the film and album’s mission to figure out what, exactly, makes a person, and moreover, how the intensity of the current moment is forcing everyone to think about big ideas more acutely, to process chaos, to understand the stakes.
“I'm pretty much just pulling apart the same onion and every album gets a little closer to the center,” Berninger says. “Sleep Well Beast was a dive into our marriage in some ways, but if that was a three-foot diving board, this one feels like a cliff dive into not just marriage, but identity. I don't know if we're any closer to the center of the onion, but I feel like I understand the onion a little better, and I feel better about the onion. I know that I am my dad, my mom, my daughter, my wife, my band, my friends, my grandmother, the guy who cut me off in traffic, the guy who didn't cut me off in traffic. I am those experiences. I am those influences. This is just an aging bucket. All these records, and all these things, are my afterlife already.”
As far as where The National goes from here, Aaron Dessner thinks the effect Mills has had on the band’s process is indelible. “He said he often throws away a statement scene in a movie because he realizes that the actual sum of it's gonna be more interesting,” he says. “I think it was an important lesson to realize that you can let go of the thing that you wrote, that you're so attached to, that you think is the bird in hand, or the critical seed of something. A lot of times in the past, we never finished records until we would basically run out of time. So, in this process, we weren't holding onto anything. We were in fact throwing away a lot of what, in the past, might have been considered hit songs, or safe bets, or whatever. Next time I sit down and write National music, I think I'll have a different perspective.”
Until then, The National has to figure out how to translate all this to a stage; they ostensibly would love to bring all the singers with them, but that will be logistically impossible. This is a good problem, and one they could barely imagine having just a few months ago.
“It's purposefully an organic, ungainly, two-headed thing and that's what excited all of us,” says Mills. “We didn't know where it was going, and we didn't know what it was going to be.”
Matt Berninger is even more succinct in his reappraisal. “These were featherless ideas we would hand back and forth to each other and people would put some feathers in it,” he says, “and at the end it was a turkey.”
I Am Easy to Find was produced by Mike Mills and The National at Long Pond, Hudson Valley, NY.

Anna Rose stumbled through the facility, ribs cracked, cuts, bruises, bullet wounds, and burns marks on her body. Propped up on her shoulder was her partner, Geoff Wetton, similarly injured and walking with a limp.
“Okay… Now to the… Center of the facility…” Anna wheezed, tired and injured but determined to finish this.
They stood in front of the large locked door to the center wing. On their persons were pieces of the cybernetics from the foes they had just defeated. A red light on the door blinked yellow, then became a solid green as the doors slid open with a quiet ‘ding’ noise, reacting to the identification within all the pieces. The duo stumbled through.
“One more... Guard, right?” Geoff said, Heat of the Moment forming behind him and cracking its’ knuckles.
“Yeah… One more…..”
The pair continued to stumble down the long hallway.
“Did we… Do it?” Anna said, apropos of nothing.
“... Free them?” Geoff replied, catching on to what Anna was getting at. She nodded.
“... Yeah, we did. Simon, Ken, Blue, and Eleanor… They can rest in peace now.... And so can Cody, so can Milja, so can Tang Wu and Thomas…. All of them… With this, now, the smoke that Deep Purple left on the world is clearing up… I know it.”
“... We’re at the door.” Anna said, taking a deep breath. “Are you ready?”
“I was born ready.” Geoff smiled.

“... So their last line of defense was this tosser?” Geoff said, crouching over the body of the soldier that had been knocked out in a single punch. He had regained enough strength to stand on his own, but still had a major limp in his leg at the moment.
“Guess so…” Anna said, before being interrupted with a loud ding. “... Well, that’s finished then.” She walked over to the machine in the center of the room, removing a silver cylinder. Written in purple writing on the side were the letters and numbers ‘L1-0N’. Anna held it for a moment. “... It’s some kind of liquid. Did you find the file?”
Geoff dug through the knocked out soldier’s belongings, before pulling out a thick dossier in a manilla folder. It, too, had the words ‘Stairway to Heaven’ written on it. “Got it… It’s long, though. Let’s wait to go through it all until we reconnect with the others.”
Anna rose nodded as Heat of the Moment grabbed the unconscious soldier and began lifting him. “Do you know which button activates the self-destruct for this place?”
Anna nodded, pointing to a nearby terminal with a 10 minute times on the screen.
Geoff walked over, and pressed the ‘enter’ key on the terminal, as a dull siren began to blare throughout the base.
“Then let’s bounce.”

A short elevator ride later, along with a small stroll to the beach, and Anna and Geoff waited, having dropped the unconscious guard safely away from the blast zone.
“Sooo…. When do you think the boat is gonna be here… We’re not gonna have to swim again, are we…?” Geoff said impatiently.
“I don’t know… All Little Pontoon said was that he’d pick us up… Do you see him any-”
As Anna began to speak, a thin white tube began to rise from the ocean, before revealing its connection to a white spherical shell. The entire structure began to melt away into what seemed like dust, revealing the boat they had arrived to the base on.
On the deck of the boat, their captain, Little Pontoon, waved. The boat was within shouting distance of the beachfront, having submerged itself under water with an air hose to stay hidden.
The same white dust that seemed to cover the ship formed something like a walkway up to the boat itself.
“It’s salt!” The sailor shouted at them. “My Stand lets me control the salt in seawater! The bridge will hold, so get aboard already! You two look like death! We’ll get you to a doctor!”
The two looked at each other and nodded, stumbling down the path of salt to the boat. As they sailed away, a rumble like an earthquake echoed from the island, the base that was the home of the Stormbringers having completely collapsed.
Scenario:
“Estero?” Gina Halfway asked, shortly after the pair saw Geoff and Anna off. “Not familiar with it. What’s out there?”
“Not much I can think of. Small town, not much to do,” T Square answered, “I mean, I guess there’s a shopping-outlet type place around that area… There’s a lot of places to hide things there, yeah?”
“It’s something to go on,” Gregor responded, nodding, “and it makes sense that Destiny would choose a place like that to hide his artifact, no? He’s from a small town in England…”
“Alright, so we know what we’re dealing with there, probably, so…” T paused, looking to one side. “Mute, y-you’re… Bouncing an awful lot.”
“I’m jumpin’ at the opportunity to take this one!” Attention drawn to her, Mute wasted no time in continuing to bounce in place, now shadow-boxing with a fiery look in her eye, and a toothy grin on her face. “No more stalemates, or cheapshots, or letting him get away… I’m finally stopping that guy!”
“You’re… Certainly eager,” T answered, chuckling slightly and shrugging. “Yeah, sure. Just, uh, be aware. He’s most definitely going to be expecting you.”
“I hope he is!”
“Me too.” The remaining members of the group went quiet, having forgotten about a certain voice in their midst.
Turning towards the man, the myth of few words, all eyes were on Buffalo Soldier as he drank down a bottle of orange juice through a straw (he used to prefer fresh-squeezed, but too dangerous now. Already been poisoned once.). He had not actually opened the cap, but rather whittled a hole to push the bendy straw through. “What? You can’t have any. I wrestled this away myself.”
“Do you… Do you wanna fight Destiny?” T asked, blinking.
“Don’t make me repeat myself, small baby man. Last time wasn’t a good time, but now we can duel as predators.”
Mute’s excited expression turned into a bit of a face-fault, pep immediately out of her step. “You mean I’ve gotta..?”
“You could not hope to take home such big game,” Buffalo illuminated, bringing his massive hand to his chest with an unmistakable mix of pride and excitement clear even through his thicket of beard. “I will handle this myself.”
“Like heck you are!” Mute shouted back up at the beastly man, before breathing a quick sigh and collecting herself. “I can live with it, I guess…” She said with a huff, already heading to prepare for the trip. “... So long as I still get a shot at that guy.
The two of you… I apologize for being so roundabout about this test, but I saw potential in you two. Thought I might test you both against one another, first your aptitude, then your honesty.
What do you mean, ‘potential?’ Why’d you send something like that after us?
I did not account for that woman, no… She and I shared guest spots on Chopped once, and I suppose she’d hated me ever since. Suffice to say the world won’t miss her anyway…
Ya know, for how plain ya look, you’re pretty hardcore. You know what? Sure, I’ll help you out. What do you need me to do?
For now… Return. Keep your head low and await further instructions from my associates. I must be off for now. I doubt we shall see each other again, but I will not forget your politeness in cooperating with my requests.
Unfortunately for Mute, not only was she riding out there with Buffalo, but the great hunter was helpful enough to make usage of his team’s eponymous vehicle in the process. They would wind up ditching it a decent ways away from their destination, of course, because the other option would be the most blatant signpost possible of their proximity, but regardless, Mute had to relive day after day of spying on Babylon by Bus to zero avail, only this time with only perhaps the least personable member of the team with her.
Why did Lucil get to go with the cool one..? Mute thought to herself with a pout, skateboarding at a leisurely enough speed towards the nearby mall that Buffalo could effortlessly keep up with a jog. Man, shrinking and growing stuff and mirror clones would be so sick. Just get a whole army of me on Destiny while the real deal is sneaking up with a big old mallet to bop him on the head, and-
“Pretzels.” Mute was taken out of her thoughts by Buffalo’s spoken interruption.
“Come again?”
“Need hunting snacks. With that fake yellow slop if they have it.”
“I mean… Sure, yeah, let’s get pretzels. Why not!” Mute threw her arms up. *Actually, those sound pretty good right around now…”
The rest of their short trek later, the pair was sitting in disappointment in front of the pretzel stand, both looking more than a little bothered at having been refused service rather blatantly.
“No way in hell these guys are sold out,” Mute remarked, “I mean look! They’re giving more to someone else right now!”
“Mmh.” Buffalo responded, looking in another direction a moment later. “Someone’s coming.”
“Is it-?” Mute cut herself off, following the line of Buffalo’s sight as she noticed just who he’d meant. To her relief (and disappointment), it wasn’t Destiny himself, but rather a younger man, tall, with neatly-combed hair. Between it, his jeans, and his untucked button-up, in all but height he was more or less the complete opposite of her partner, and more importantly, his appearance rang a bit of a bell with Mute. “Wait… I’ve heard of you! You’re…”
“Damon Aurel, yep! Dunno if we’ve met face-to-face, but Nick’s talked about ya a bunch.” As he spoke, he never seemed to be standing completely still, the eccentric young Philosopher eyed up Mute and Buffalo. Noting their confused expressions, he added, “er… See, when Geoff and all them went off, they went ahead and told the rest of their buds who weren’t dead yet what they were up to. It’s kinda our thing as the smart team to plan for an emergency, yeah?”
Mute relaxed a bit at the guy’s words. Such careful planning does sound like Nick… “Well, you probably already know it then, but we’re all working together now. Actually think there’s an artifact hidden in this mall somewhere. Happen to see anything like that? Like, a little bonsai tree?”
Buffalo said nothing, continuing to watch Damon. Naturally, this momentarily intimidated him, but he shrugged it off. “Shoot, really? Think I mighta seen something like that I thought was out of place, but… Ya know, I’d never seen any other than ours up in person, so I didn’t know it was anything but a weird decoration.”
“You have? Oh, sweet! Wanna lead the way?”
“Sure, sure.” He held up a hand and began heading back the way he’d come from. “Right this way after me, now! Don’t fall behind!”
Mute stood, stretched, and followed, signalling for Buffalo to do the same. It took several moments, but he did eventually come along as well, catching up quickly.
Hyello?
Yes, it’s me again. My apologies for taking so long to contact you again, but things have been… busy, on my end. I don’t have long to talk now, for that matter, but I’ll cut to the chase. Dr. Nick Mason must attend a memorial banquet two weeks from now. Could you, perhaps, convince him?
I mean, I would, but… Gonna be blunt here myself if you’re short on time, buddy. It’ll look pretty sus if I just start tellin’ him to go do that outta nowhere. Even with all my connections, it ain’t a good look. Think there’s some… more natural way for me to happen across this piece of info?
Hm… You have a good point. Perhaps… Ah, a friend of mine will be refereeing a game between two Canadian acquaintances. They’ve actually been searching for second and third members apiece to turn the tides. If you could meet with her under pretenses of playing the game…
Sports, huh..? Yeah, I’ve got it. Heck, I know just who to drag along with me! Heh, if I make her do it, I might be able to make those idiots think I’m just doin’ it as a prank, too.
“So yeah, I’d mostly been keeping up work with my buddies in Cali until recently,” Damon explained to his companions, “but when I got that call I knew I had to drop everything and head out here. So you guys really have six of those darn things between you, huh?”
“Gonna be a solid nine out of nine soon,” Mute said with confidence, before adding in a worried tone, “just, uh… Keep your eyes peeled, yeah? Not just for the tree, but… I dunno how to put it. A lot of the time, when someone’s come back all of a sudden, they just sorta died again. Strato, Buffalo’s old boss…”
“Hard finding hungry vultures these days,” Buffalo remarked.
“Uh… Right,” Damon answered, not getting it, “but you all don’t need to be worried about me. I know what I’m doing!”
The trio continued northwards at their leisurely pace, Damon even stopping and looking at sunglass hut momentarily while the others passed him by. Not far away, standing in front of the duck pond, was someone familiar in a completely unfamiliar set of new digs, holding a bag from some kitchenware store. Even with a white disco suit on, turned around and facing the fountain, Mute would recognize that fro, that cold manner of standing around, anywhere. If it wasn’t already obvious, though, the fact that he’s staring at a distinctive-looking bonsai tree in front of the duck fountain was just as much of a giveaway. “Uhh, Damon, look alive, I think that’s him!”
“Seriously, Mute, you don’t need to be worried about me!” As Destiny turned around and stared directly at the pair from several meters away, Damon finally walked up behind them, a grin on his face. “After all, I’m the only one here who knows the right place to throw his hat in.”
Somethin’ up, Destiny? You sound tense.
Sorry for that, just… Ran into somebody I rather would have not, and it may have cost me another friend. I have to move fast before either catches up to me.
Right, right, another cut-to-the-chase thing. Man I feel like we never just hang out anymore.
Anymore? We–Never mind. It actually may be good for you to lay low with me a short while after this assignment. See… We need you to take another trip up to Canada. Sometime within the next few days, be close by a radio with a certain specific partner.
Ooh, what is it this time? Curling? Milk bagging?
…we’re going to be putting you up against the last of Jaded Justice. While it’s preferable that you kill them there, of course, the most important thing here… Is that Marco F. Caine does not leave alive. If they or the elements don’t kill him… I understand it may be a lot to ask of you, but-
You kidding? I mean no offense, friend, but remember who you’re talking to. I’ve done in people I like way more than that guy.
“Wait… What are you saying now, Damon? You’re not really…”
“For months now, actually!” He admitted up front, laughing a little. “And now we’ve got both of ya right where we want ya! I dunno why you’re surprised, though. It’s not like you and I were ever on the same team or anything…”
“Yes, Damon, I’m aware you wanted one of them to be here,” Destiny spoke up, finally, with a tone that betrayed that this was not the first time today they’d had this very conversation.”
“I had a whole rant planned and everything, and it’ll just be weird at some strangers!”
“Your friends are fighting the strangers,” Buffalo corrected, missing the point of the conversation.
“Buffalo Soldier… I was hoping not to have to fight you,” Destiny mused aloud at his piping in, looking him over. “You saved my life once, and my gratitude for that is immeasurable, even after I have repaid you, but… You knew it would come to this when you pursued me to this place.”
“So… You knew we were coming because…” Mute began, catching onto exactly what was happening here.
“Because Mason did the smart thing!” Damon exclaimed. “He let me an’ Dan know, ‘just in case,’ that our teammates were off going to some suspicious meeting in Miami, so to look into it if they disappeared or anything. The perfect pieces of info to give the Hall of Heads fell right into my lap, and now because of that, they knew to split up, that you guys couldn’t resist trying to divide and conquer us one by one, and that hey, while you were at it, you’d probably deal with senatorguy for us too! Your pals Lucil and Amaki? Probably already riddled with bullet holes by some of my best men before they can even lay a finger on Lilah Dawn.”
Dramatic irony aside, this declaration did shock and alarm Mute, and Buffalo even tensed a little, visibly. “We were their prey from the start…”
“A completely understandable precaution becoming your greatest error… I suppose there’s something interesting in the irony of that.” Destiny added.
“Not even the first time something like that’s happened,” Damon remarked, finding the circumstances rather amusing.
Yoko Takizawa and her bite-sized stand, Lily of the Valley, sat by the side of the George Washington Bridge, looking out over the Hudson River. She’d up and forgotten to fill the thing with gas, and now she was just waiting for somebody to come by with a can and fill her up.
“Yo.” Damon Aurel seemed to just sort of appear in her peripheral vision, a goofy grin on his face and identifiable red container in his offhand, already moving to put it in her car.
“There y’are, stranger! I couldn’t get ahold of ya the other day, otherwise I would’ve told you first like you asked, but Doc Mason fill you in yet? I learned some pretty prime stuff about that Deep Purple tech that keeps poppin’ up everywhere… Already outdated a tad, even. Didn’t even take a couple days before the senator guy went and ditched all his old buddies…”
“Yeah, I heard about all the first part of that. Crazy stuff.”
“Not only that,” Yoko added, setting Lily of the Valley’s flower down in her passenger seat before taking the driver’s, “but apparently now he’s lookin’ to get in good with some crime guys in Saint Petersburg… Whew, that’ll be a hassle if he goes through with it. I was gonna report this all to the foundation, grab some more barbecue, an’ then go tell Mason. Wanna ride with me?”
“I’m good. Don’t really feel like getting wet…”
“Wait…” Yoko looked confused. “This the setup to some kinda-”
Before she’d fully realized what was going on, ‘Rock the House’ had grabbed her small, physically fragile stand in one hand and squeezed with all its might. As damage transferred to the investigator like squeezing a grape, Damon walked away, his stand lifting the car and its driver and dropping them into the water below.
“People like us…” Damon started, “are a cut above the rest of the world. We’ve been given gifts that make us not just stronger, more capable, but all-around superior to everyone else. People like me an’ Destiny… It’s our birthright to do whatever we please with the world!”
“You… You..! I don’t even know who that girl is, but there’s no excuse to just take a life like that!” Mute exclaimed, Atomic Bonsai coming out. “Hateful murderers like you and Destiny… You’re the ones with no right to this world!”
Buffalo, without a word, had already manifested Wild Wild West. He spoke in a flat tone, quickly getting across all information “I have no need for luxury… Just peace, quiet, and to find one who sees the world as I do.” His chest rising with a mighty sigh, Buffalo Soldier’s dire gaze peered through the duo. “Can’t have that with you around.”
“So this is what it’s come to, huh… Guess I’ll just have to get through you before the people I really wanna see the looks on the faces of.” Damon remarked excitedly, his own stand coming forth as he struck a fluid pose. “Ready to go, Destiny my man?”
“Completely.” Destiny himself nodded, stretching out himself and manifesting Lemon Demon. “Normally, I consider myself a reserved person, not the type to get… unprofessional. It would be impolite to get so explosively personal in a battle, of course, and an executioner must be a dispassionate man. But now, here I am, at the eve of everything my companions and I have worked towards, days away from returning to GIANTS and reaping the fruits of our resolve… As I prepare to face you both, I can say with the utmost confidence…” He struck a slightly different pose, hand outstretched, and a grin cracking through his usually stone expression.
“I’m really going to enjoy this.”
OPEN THE GAME!
Location: The Miromar Outlet Mall in Estero, Florida. A labeled map of the area you’ll be fighting in is here. Though not exact in real life, we’re treating the area of this map as roughly 600x300 meters. Players and bosses start where indicated by color. Destiny is the yellow spot, Damon blue, Buffalo Gray, and Mute Orange, approximately. Destiny and Damon are intended to be in the rough ballpark of 10-15 meters apart from one another, with the other two in between.
‘The Hanging Tree’ is sitting right on the edge of the duck fountain.
Goal: Soul Rebels, defeat Destiny Showdown and Damon Aurel so you can claim The Hanging Tree. Destiny, Damon, kill the Soul Rebels here and continue keeping the Tree secure.
Additional Information:
Across every storefront and the outdoor areas, the mall currently has approximately 255 guests besides the four of you, not especially tightly packed, wandering all over the place and its various shops in no particular order or pattern. Let it preemptively said that they won’t consciously cooperate with any efforts to fight on either team’s behalf, but aren’t actively interfering either. Their stats are Str, Spd, End 2, Entitlement 3, and Patience 1.
In preparation for this confrontation, Destiny paid off the owners of the mall for a bit of an agreement: basically, he and Damon could take whatever they wanted and it would be covered, while ‘these nine people’ (the Soul Rebels and T Square) would be refused service everywhere on the premises. This doesn’t make accessing the mall’s resources impossible, but it sure makes it harder.
Boss Information:
Damon Aurel’s information can still be found on his character sheet.
Destiny is largely similar to his previous battle, but has gained a few alterations, which will be listed below:
Name: Destiny Showdown
Age: 31
Gender: Male
Species: Human
Occupation: Owner, head chef, manager, and bartender of the family-oriented grill and bar, Mouth Moods.
Personality: Destiny Showdown is a man with an overall honest heart, polite, quiet, and content to keep to himself most of the time, if sometimes appearing somewhat intimidating and coming across as a stick in the mud at times due to his sheer value of courtesy. This value is so great, in fact, that there is no way to lower his opinion of you quicker than simply swearing a lot, or interrupting him on an errand. He’ll let some things slide, sure, but once he feels too slighted, he’ll be sent on the warpath with that same infallible calmness.
Bio: While Destiny Showdown was growing up, his strict, strict parents valued courtesy nearly as much as he does now. If he mouthed off to them, and especially if he happened to repeat a naughty word he’d heard, he would be punished extremely severely, more often than not physically. Showdown claims that absolutely nothing is unusual about his upbringing and early life, having just sort of been conditioned to accept that his troublesome parents were a standard of behavior to strive for.
This value for politeness has been deeply rooted in his psyche, and even as a grown, overall surprisingly-adjusted man, Destiny can’t help but feel some sort of violent urge whenever he hears someone mouthing off. He was born with his stand, and his ability made him one of the more tolerated kids in school despite his low-key, slightly nerdy personality, as well as significantly cutting down on expenses once he decided to open up his own bar in his hometown in Somnolence, England, which he eventually moved it to a larger city nearby for the sake of converting it to a full-on restaurant. Water is a courtesy to guests in most restaurants, so somebody who can turn water into anything can make a profitable business while literally offering absolutely any beverage at no charge to his guests, so long as they keep behaved.
Guests who repeatedly misbehave, however, have a tendency to never be heard from again, once more courtesy of his stand. For the sake of creating a more kindhearted world where everyone receives what’s due to them, where the plentifulness of the world is given to those who need it, where nobody is overly rude to people who’ve done them no wrong (to the point of the same violent extremism he already has about people who so much as curse too liberally), this man has recently closed the doors of his thriving restaurant and began working as a hitman for the Hall of Heads, cementing his place as one of his boss’ most trusted allies from the start.
Strength - 2 (about what you would expect for a grown man with an active lifestyle)
Agility - 3 (in the restaurant business, you need to be light on your feet)
Endurance - 3 (he can take a few solid hits fine)
Cleaning - 3 (Destiny runs both a tight ship and a tidy one. He’s skilled at sweeping through an area, identifying things that don’t belong, and disposing of them handily. It’s a thankless job, but without people keeping facilities clean, society would crumble.)
Restaurateur - 5 (Destiny Showdown owns and manages a family restaurant that gets quite a bit of traffic due to his competitive pricing. Until shortly before he embarked on this quest and closed his doors, in fact, he only had one or two employees on at a time. This required him to become skilled in the likes of precise food preparation, locations, complex orders, mixing drinks, immense patience, improvisation, and exceptional multitasking skills. He also knows on-sight the sort of people who tip poorly, and is generally good at determining things at a single glance. In short, if it’s even tangentially running a bar and restaurant with so few employees well, he’s good at it.)
Physical Description: Standing at a just slightly above average height for a grown Englishman, Destiny Showdown’s facial features are pale and angular, thick-rimmed glasses covering his eyes. His purple hair is styled into a bit of a ‘fro, and he’s dramatically changed his actual wardrobe since his previous appearances. Now, he is clad in a rather loud, primarily white-colored Elvis-inspired number, consisting of a vest (covered in imagery of his stand underneath a raging sea), , a shirt with sleeves emblazoned with the likeness of his stand’s tendrils, dramatically popped collars, men’s disco pants, shoes, and underneath everything, a dark-colored morphsuit over every bit of his skin but his head, not to mention pairs of rubber gloves already on his hands. The vest and belt are emblazoned with logos for his restaurant, Mouth Moods, his stand, Lemon Demon, and his team, the Hall of Heads. Here is a picture of him, Damon Aurel, and their stands, by Skelly-tan.
Equipment: The insides of his disco suit are full of bags containing wet sponges, duct tape, moist towelettes, six average-sized water bottles, rubber gloves, rubber bands, goggles that go over his nose, and a surgical mask. After Damon confirmed the presence of his opponents, he also hurried to acquire half a dozen rolls of wax paper, currently held in a Kitchen Collection bag he’s holding.
Stand Name: Lemon Demon
Stand Type: Long-range offense.
Stand Appearance: A yellow-green, lemon-shaped creature with an angered face. Lemon Demon boasts multiple tentacles protruding from itself which have some impressive amount of suction to them, but can also float freely within its effective range. Pictured in the link above. Not uncommonly, Destiny will attach a soaked sponge to each of its six tentacles using a sturdy rubber band, a process with which he is so familiar he can do it without even looking or pausing.
Stand Ability: Lemon Demon’s ability is simple. It can absorb water through its tentacles, and then shoot it back out converted into any liquid its user desires (yes, including other types of water) at a rate and intensity of his choosing (so, for example, it could come out slowly and softly like a fountain, or in a single intense jet), or simply stir it around with one of Lemon Demon’s tentacles to an identical effect. On top of many ordinary liquids able to be made through this method, the Stand can also convert it into a unique, acid-like material that can even dissolve through the absolute hardiest of stands. However, Destiny isn’t immune to this, and the only reason Lemon Demon is is because otherwise it would destroy itself by simply producing it. In a pinch, it can also strike things up close with its tentacles or bite things, but with how fragile the stand is this runs the risk of breaking them off, at which point they require a second each to grow back.
Power: A - The tentacles, while fragile, hit like hell, it can bite things, and the absolute biggest reason for this exceptional power ranking is the special corrosive material it produces. Even the hardiest of stands can’t withstand sustained fire from Lemon Demon’s main attack. Lower intensities of firing off liquid would be equivalent to lower power rankings, but the most intense, focused stream itself can harm you and knock you back before even factoring in what’s being shot at you. The actual strength of his most intense streams are also nothing to scoff at.
Speed: A - Lemon Demon is a small, lightweight target with exceptional movement speed, and the conversion rate between water and other liquids, as well as the highest speed at which it can fire out liquid, is exceptional. It’s very difficult to land a direct hit.
Durability: E - The tentacles lack damage transference, but break off easily, and the stand’s main body is about as durable as the peel of a ripe citrus fruit. Its only defensive saving grace is immunity to its own strongest attack, and even that’s simply a side-effect of the fact that it produces it. Tentacles take one second each to grow back, and Destiny must choose for this to happen.
Range: C - The Stand can easily fire its various liquids a couple dozen meters away, but generally the stand itself stays somewhat close to Destiny so he can 1) aim it more easily, and 2) not have it too far out in the open in case of strong, precise attackers. It can move further out, though, to the extent of a C-range.
Precision: D - While Destiny can freely control the movements of his stand, and is a more than serviceable shot at close range, the further away it tries to fire, the harder to precisely aim the liquid stream is, unless he specifically takes time to deliberately coordinate a shot. That said, thanks to Restauranteur - 5, he can do this quicker than you’d expect as long as he knows where roughly to aim.

MOVIE GUIDE
BATTLE OF THE SEXES - From the directors of Little Miss Sunshine comes this boisterous chronicle of the Battle of the Sexes, a famous 1973 tennis match between women’s world champion Billie Jean King and ex-men’schamp and serial hustler Bobby Riggs. Off-court each was fighting more personal and complex battles. The fiercely private King was not only championing for equality, but also struggling to come to terms with her own sexuality, as her friendship with Marilyn Barnett developed. And Riggs, one of the first self-made media-age celebrities, wrestled with his gambling demons, at the expense of his family and wife Priscilla. Together, Billie and Bobby served up a cultural spectacle that resonated far beyond the tennis court, sparking discussions in bedrooms and boardrooms that continue to reverberate today.

GOODBYE CHRISTOPHER ROBIN - The latest film from Simon Curtis (Woman in Gold) offers a rare glimpse into the relationship between beloved children's author A. A. Milne (Domhnall Gleeson) and his son Christopher Robin (Will Tilston), whose toys inspired the magical world of Winnie-the-Pooh. Along with his mother Daphne (Margot Robbie), and his nanny Olive (Kelly Macdonald), Christopher Robin and his family are swept up in the international success of the books; the enchanting tales bringing hope and comfort to England after the First World War. But with the eyes of the world on Christopher Robin, what will the cost be to the family?

2017.10.12 14:57 owner-of-the-boner Weekly Movie and TV Discussion Thread 10-12-2017

Welcome to the Weekly Movie And TV Discussion Thread! Going to go a little lighter on the commentary this week, switch up the format and see what works best.

Movie Releases:

The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected)
This Netflix release is directed by Noah Baumbach, the occasional screenwriting partner of Wes Anderson and director of such films as De Palma and Greenberg. Adam Sandler received a standing ovation for his performance at the Cannes Film Festival, which is a sentence that you never thought you would read.

The Foreigner
If you’re not excited about Jackie Chan hunting terrorists to avenge the death of his daughter, I want you to post your address in the comments so I can get on a plane and come to your place and take you out for ice cream, because you need help finding joy in life. P.S. Jackie Chan is worth an estimated 350 MILLION dollars. That’s more than Brad Pitt, Leo Dicaprio, Mark Wahlberg, and Tom Hanks.

Marshall
A cool story about a cool dude in a not very cool time in American History. Every year around this time, it seems that a movie dealing with the plight of African Americans in our country’s history gets released. They’re usually pretty damn good (12 Years a Slave, Moonlight, Selma). Chadwick Boseman may find himself in Oscar discussions later this year.

Happy Death Day
This one is produced by Blumhouse, who staked their claim in Hollywood by producing insanely low budget horror movies and thrillers, hoping to strike gold in the box office. Other Blumhouse Projects are Paranormal Activity, The Purge, and Sinister. If you’re a fan of those franchises you will have a great time, as long as you know what you’re in for.

Also opening: Professor Marston and the Wonder Women, Goodbye Christopher Robin, Breathe, Gnome Alone.

TV Releases:
Mindhunter
One of my favorite directors (David Fincher) produces a Netflix series about one of my favorite subjects (serial killers)? Sign me the fuck up. Too bad the girl is out of town and I have to wait to watch this one until she gets back. Watching a show that you have already sneaky watched and having to act surprised and not get caught is the absolute worst way to enjoy a show.

Mr. Robot
I LOVED season one of Mr Robot. Then season two rolled around and I just kind of stopped watching. I don’t really know why, but I am curious if anyone else had this same thing happen to them. Bobby Cannavale joins season 3, I am going to go out on a limb here and say he plays a sleazy Italian guy.

Lore
This one is based on a popular podcast that I happen to enjoy, and is an anthology series about old urban legends and unbelievable stories from history. Luckily I have Amazon prime TV, which just so happens to be one thing I will leech off my mother no matter what age I am.

Also premiering: Supernatural Season 13, Arrow Season 6, White Famous.

Well that does it for the Weekly Movie and TV Discussion Thread. If you have anything else you’re excited to see that I missed, or you caught up on something old recently, drop it in the comments below.

Good Tuesday morning. FIRST IN PLAYBOOK: As Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell works to craft an Obamacare replacement bill, PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP is having lunch today with 13 senators to “discuss the status” of the process. TRUMP’S DINING PARTNERS: Sens. Rob Portman (Ohio), John Thune (S.D.), Pat Toomey (Pa.), Mike Lee (Utah), Ted Cruz (Texas), Lamar Alexander (Tenn.), John Barrasso (Wyo.), Cory Gardner (Colo.), Tom Cotton (Ark.), Lisa Murkowski (Alaska), Susan Collins (Maine), Joni Ernst (Iowa) and Orrin Hatch (Utah).
-- HEALTH CARE STATUS REPORT: BURGESS EVERETT: “Senate GOP reins in expectations for killing Obamacare: Some Republican lawmakers are growing worried about their tight time frame for overhauling health care”: “Senate Republicans are aggressively trying to rein in expectations for their Obamacare repeal effort, wary of blowing a deadline or falling short of 50 votes on a promise that has driven the GOP’s political strategy for much of the past decade. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is still aiming for an Obamacare repeal vote in June, though his lieutenants acknowledge that deadline could slip into July. And while GOP leaders want to hold the vote as soon as possible, Republicans continue to avoid hard deadlines and say factors outside their control could strike.
“‘It’s like having a baby,’ said Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn (R-Texas). ‘It’s not here yet, but it’s coming.’ … A public copy of the bill or the CBO score are not expected until just days before any vote, minimizing the ability of opposition to mobilize, aides said. If a June vote is not possible, Republicans hope to at least to have an agreement on a bill before heading home for the July 4 recess.” http://politi.co/2rlTGcD

PLAYBOOK EXCLUSIVE -- SERGEY KISLYAK TRYING TO REPAIR FRAYED U.S.-RUSSIA RELATIONS: Embattled Russian diplomat Sergey Kislyak played host to Washington insiders and diplomats at the Russian Embassy Monday night, greeting guests one-by-one in a long receiving line at the embassy in honor of Russia Day. Attendees were encouraged to pose for photos with signs that said “I love Russia” and post them on Facebook, Instagram and other social networks.
The frayed U.S.-Russia relationship was clearly on the embassy’s mind as they handed out a pamphlet highlighting the two countries’ close relationship. On the cover: “As an American, I love Russia - friend of Washington and Lincoln.” At the top of the second page, there was this: “As an American, I love Russia because if not for Russia, there may not have been a United States of America.”
Russia’s top seven reasons for the close U.S.-Russia ties: “1. During the birth of our Nation, Russia supported the Thirteen Colonies in their way of Independence from Britain. 2. Russia helped preserve the Union during the American Civil War. 3. Alaska, California and Hawaii became States of the Union due to friendly US-Russian relations. 4. Russia was our ally in both World Wars 5. Russian International Peace Initiatives are the foundation of the United Nations. 6. Russian Arts and Sciences have enriched the world, and Russian Americans have made great contributions to American culture. 7. Russian President Putin was the first to call American President Bush to offer help and condolences after the tragedy of 9/11.”
SPEAKING OF THOSE CLOSE TIES -- “Russian Breach of 39 States Threatens Future U.S. Elections,” by Bloomberg’s Michael Riley and Jordan Robertson: “Russian hackers hit election systems in at least 39 states before Donald Trump’s election as president, according to a person with direct knowledge of the matter, an attack on almost twice as many states as previously reported. The hacks were part of a wave of intrusions in the summer and fall of 2016, details of which were provided by the person and two others familiar with a U.S. investigation of the attacks. Hackers breached a campaign finance database in at least one unidentified state, they said, and tried to alter or delete data from a voter database in Illinois.
“The scope and sophistication of the attacks so concerned the White House that Obama administration officials for the first time used a dedicated communication channel -- the cyber equivalent of the nuclear ‘red phone’ -- to signal to the Kremlin that the attacks risked escalating into a broader conflict, according to two of the people. The U.S. also provided detailed documents it considered proof of an act of aggression, which they said met with a chilly Russian response.” https://bloom.bg/2rVU2p9
-- COMING ATTRACTIONS: “Senate deal to boost Russia sanctions seen as imminent,” by Elana Schor: “Senators are vetting the language of a bipartisan deal to punish Russia that would allow Congress to disapprove of any attempt by President Donald Trump to ease sanctions on Moscow, Foreign Relations Chairman Bob Corker said late Monday. Whether the Tennessee Republican’s optimism translates into a vote this week remains to be seen, however, with Democrats declining to confirm that a deal is done.
“If the Senate can pass a strong Russia sanctions package, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) could both claim a measure of victory — while also dealing a blow to the White House, which has floated a possible deal to roll back penalties on Vladimir Putin’s government in exchange for further cooperation on anti-terrorism efforts.” http://politi.co/2tgm2li
FIRST IN PLAYBOOK: THE DAWSEY DOWNLOAD -- “One of President Trump’s closest friends spent several hours in the White House Monday and emerged to say on TV that the president may fire Robert Mueller, the special prosecutor, and that it would be a ‘significant mistake.’ It was an only-in-Trump’s White House kind of moment.
“Senior aides said the friend, Chris Ruddy, was only speculating, and said Trump was unlikely to can the former FBI director. One official said Ruddy didn’t meet with the president -- but instead spent several hours with senior administration aides. ‘I wouldn’t take it too seriously,’ a White House official said.
“The reality is that Trump has sounded out associates about his concerns over Mueller -- and no one knows what he might do. Trump would be making a big mistake if he tried to fire Mueller, and they don’t believe he will, aides said. He has been warned against it ‘by almost everyone,’ one adviser said. But he is often governed by self-preservation. He hates losing control of situations. He often lashes out when he feels someone could damage him. Plus, surrogates have begun telling him what trouble Mueller could pose. He met several times with New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie at Bedminster over the weekend.
“So, yes, it seems unlikely Trump will try to fire Mueller. But then again, no one expected him to fire James Comey.”
-- SPICER STATEMENT, delivered by email from Sean to reporters: “Mr. Ruddy never spoke to the President regarding this issue. With respect to this subject, only the President or his attorneys are authorized to comment.”
-- RUDDY DOUBLES DOWN, in email to us: “Spicer issued a bizarre late night press release that a) doesn’t deny my claim the President is considering firing Mueller and b) says I didn’t speak to the President about the matter -- when I never claimed to have done so. Memo to Sean: focus your efforts on exposing the flim-flam Russian allegations against POTUS and highlighting his remarkable achievements! Don’t waste time trying to undermine one of your few allies.”
-- THE STRANGE THING: The White House still won’t comment on if, in fact, the president is considering getting rid of Mueller.
BUT, BUT, BUT … -- “Republicans to Trump: Hands off Mueller,” by Austin Wright and Kyle Cheney: “Republican lawmakers have a warning for President Donald Trump: Don’t mess with Robert Mueller. Some Trump allies have begun agitating for Trump to fire the man appointed just last month as a special counsel to oversee the Justice Department’s investigation of Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election. … But that would be a huge mistake, Republican lawmakers said Monday. ‘It would be a disaster,’ said Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) ‘There's no reason to fire Mueller. What’s he done to be fired?’” http://politi.co/2rqdnvd
-- COME ON, NEWT! @ReaganBattalion: “Less than a month ago @newtgingrich hailed Mueller as a ‘superb choice’ with an ‘IMPECCABLE’ reputation. Today he says he can’t be trusted.” http://bit.ly/2sWRupg
HAPPENING TODAY -- “Sessions to face sharp questions on Russia contacts,” by AP’s Eric Tucker and Deb Riechmann: “Attorney General Jeff Sessions is preparing for sharp questions from his former Senate colleagues about his role in the firing of James Comey, his Russian contacts during the campaign and his decision to recuse from an investigation into possible ties between Moscow and associates of President Donald Trump. The public testimony Tuesday before the Senate intelligence committee should yield Sessions’ most extensive comments to date on questions that have dogged his entire tenure as attorney general and that led him three months ago to step aside from the Russia probe.” http://apne.ws/2rquQ6D
-- WHAT NOT TO EXPECT: “Sessions won’t reveal information about conversations with Trump,” by Tara Palmeri and Josh Gerstein: “Jeff Sessions does not plan to reveal information about his private conversations with President Donald Trump during his testimony tomorrow before the Senate Intel Committee, according to sources close to the Attorney General. The sources said the former senator and Trump loyalist is unlikely to talk about any direct conversations with the president. ‘I wouldn’t expect the attorney general to discuss that,’ the source said. It was unclear whether the Attorney General would cite executive privilege as such, or simply say he wants to preserve the confidentiality of his discussions with Trump.” http://politi.co/2svFrly … The Sessions hearing is today at 2:30 p.m. in Hart 216.
THE TALKING POINTS …
-- Johanna Persing, RNC director of media affairs, emailed GOP communicators late Monday with a series of talking points for surrogates ahead of Sessions’ hearing. GOP talking points include: Trump has done nothing wrong; Sessions “continues to be open, honest and transparent;” Sessions’ meeting with Russian officials is standard practice; and asks surrogates to push for more answers on former Attorney General Loretta Lynch and fired FBI director James Comey’s interactions. The emailhttp://politi.co/2rqfSh6
-- Constance Boozer, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer’s director of surrogate and media affairs, emailed “friends and allies” Monday afternoon with their own set of talking points ahead of the Sessions hearing. Topline message: Sessions needs to answer several questions and to step down. “The fact that he isn’t willing to appear before the Committee with jurisdiction over the Department of Justice, the Judiciary Committee, shows that ‘the cloud’ of the Russia investigation makes it impossible for him to do the job of Attorney General,” Boozer wrote. The emailhttp://politi.co/2rqbVci
WHAT TRUMP WANTS TO BE TALKING ABOUT -- “Trump’s White House wants to change the subject: Trump, smarting over coverage of Russia probes, thinks his administration doesn’t get enough credit,” by Matt Nussbaum and Josh Dawsey: “The White House has been spending more time trying to focus staff on weekly agenda items, two administration officials said. Senior officials have tried to cheer up younger aides by reminding them that ‘voters aren’t going to make their choices based on some hard-to-understand, he-said, she-said accusation,’ one said, adding that the White House believes voters will stand by them if the economy remains strong. ... Trump also inaccurately declared on Monday that he’d ‘passed more legislation’ than any predecessor besides Franklin D. Roosevelt. Harry Truman passed 55 bills in his first 100 days, while Trump had signed 48 by his 142nd day. Many of those have been to designate buildings or other less noticeable actions.” With a Josh Holmes cameohttp://politi.co/2rqik75
DEMOCRATS’ SILVER LINING -- “Trump hearings hatch Democratic stars,” by Gabe Debenedetti: “California Sen. Kamala Harris had the latest star turn last week, with her tough interrogation of Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats and National Security Agency Director Adm. Mike Rogers and questioning of former FBI Director James Comey. Before that, it was Minnesota Sen. Al Franken, whose revealing cross-examination of Attorney General Jeff Sessions sparked a boomlet of fresh presidential speculation earlier this year. Virginia Sen. Mark Warner has seen his work on the Senate Intelligence Committee suddenly revive talk of his national prospects, which had faded after he laid the groundwork roughly a decade ago. ...
“The beneficiaries of the surge in attention aren’t limited to members of the key committees on the Trump beat — the Intelligence and Judiciary panels. First-term Connecticut Sen. Chris Murphy, for example, has been especially active in speaking out about the Russia probes and on immigration, leading to reports that the White House is now eying him as a potential 2020 opponent. Yet it’s the former prosecutors Harris, Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar, and California Rep. Adam Schiff who have been front-and-center in harnessing the party’s fury, largely because they’ve been the ones in the televised spotlight.” http://politi.co/2siKKny
DEPT. OF YA CAN’T MAKE IT UP -- “Former NBA player Dennis Rodman arrives in North Korea,” by AP’s Eric Talmadge in Pyongyang: “Dennis Rodman, the former NBA bad boy who has palled around with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, flew back to Pyongyang on Tuesday for the first time in Donald Trump’s presidency. He said he is ‘just trying to open a door’ on a mission that he thinks his former ‘Celebrity Apprentice’ boss would support. Rodman, one of the few people to know both of the nuclear-armed leaders, sported a black T-shirt advertising a marijuana cybercurrency as he talked to reporters briefly before his flight from Beijing to the North Korean capital. Asked if he had spoken to Trump about his trip, he said, ‘Well, I’m pretty sure he’s pretty much happy with the fact that I’m over here trying to accomplish something that we both need. ...
“‘We are aware of his visit. We wish him well, but we have issued travel warnings to Americans and suggested they not travel to North Korea for their own safety,’ U.S. Undersecretary of State Thomas Shannon told reporters after discussing the North Korean missile threat and other issues with Japanese counterparts.” http://apne.ws/2tguZuP
THE CABINET MEETING HEARD AROUND THE WORLD …
-- NYT’S JULIE HIRSCHFELD DAVIS: “Mr. Trump transformed a routine meeting of senior members of his government into a mood-boosting, ego-stroking display of support for himself and his agenda. While the president never explicitly asked to be praised, Mr. Pence set the worshipful tone, and Mr. Trump made it clear he liked what he heard. ‘Thank you, Mick,’ he told Mick Mulvaney, his budget director. ‘Good job,’ he told Scott Pruitt, his E.P.A. chief. ‘Very good, Daniel,’ he said to Dan Coats, the director of national intelligence. ... In a video posted with the tweet, Senator Chuck Schumer, Democrat of New York and the minority leader, sat at a table with young staff members who, at his prompting, praised his performance on Sunday talk shows and the appearance of his hair. One repeated Mr. Priebus’s quotation word for word, prompting the senator and his aides to erupt into laughter.” http://nyti.ms/2tgdudT

WELCOME TO WASHINGTON -- “Melania Trump Leaves New York Behind for the White House,” by NYT’s Maggie Haberman: “Melania Trump will attend a congressional picnic in the final days of June. She will start filling out her roster of aides. She will get her son settled into his new home and, then, in the fall, a new school. And she will turn attention to the range of issues that a first lady has the ability to affect.
“For the first time since President Trump was inaugurated, his wife is living full time in the White House. She and the couple’s 11-year-old son, Barron, left Trump Tower in Manhattan behind over the weekend, a transition that the first lady announced on her husband’s favorite medium, Twitter, after it was completed. …
“Mrs. Trump’s immediate focus is likely to be inside the White House, where her husband has become increasingly isolated from his party and even his own staff since his abrupt firing of James B. Comey, the director of the F.B.I. ‘She is the president’s never-ending barometer of reality, and she delivers candor and honesty blended with selfless love for him and his family in equal doses,’ said Thomas J. Barrack Jr., a close friend of the Trumps who has known the first lady since 1998.” http://nyti.ms/2swbS2V
-- WAPO’S KRISSAH THOMPSON: “Five questions about Melania Trump’s move to the White House”: “Will Melania Trump keep her husband from sending controversial wee-hours tweets? … Will she build an advocacy program, such as Michelle Obama’s ‘Let’s Move’ or Laura Bush’s National Book Festival, or undertake any restoration projects in the White House? … How will Barron Trump’s presence change life in the White House? … Will Melania Trump engage with D.C.’s social scene? … How will Melania Trump leave her mark on the job?” http://wapo.st/2rVvblm
-- “Barron Trump’s ‘The Expert’ T-shirt sells out at J. Crew,” by The Washington Examiner’s Leah DePiero: “The T-shirt Barron Trump wore while exiting Marine One with his parents on Sunday as he and first lady Melania Trump officially moved into the White House has sold out on J. Crew as of Monday. The gray cotton ringer T-shirt with the words ‘The Expert’ in blue lettering gained attention after 11-year-old Barron paired it with dark jeans and sneakers on Sunday. ‘We’re sorry. This item has been so popular, it has sold out,’ J. Crew’s website said of the $29.50 shirt.” http://washex.am/2sndsEH
IT’S ALL HAPPENING -- “Former Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski shopping book – again,” by CNN’s Oliver Darcy: “Publishers were told to submit offers to Lewandowski's agent, Mel Berger of WME Entertainment, by a Friday deadline ... Berger was expecting to ultimately fetch seven figures for the book deal. It was not clear what Lewandowski’s book would be about. A proposal wasn’t submitted, likely to avoid details leaking to the public, the source added. Lewandowski previously had an offer from HarperCollins worth $1.2 million, but lost it over concerns about a nondisclosure agreement he signed during the campaign, Politico reported last June. This time around, however, publishers were told Lewandowski had been able to obtain a waiver of the nondisclosure agreement, one of the sources familiar with the matter said.” http://cnnmon.ie/2rd6Ft5
TRUMP’S TUESDAY -- He’s meeting with H.R. McMaster, lunching with members of the Senate and then will go to Milwaukee. In Milwaukee he will meet with “Obamacare victims,” speak about health care and tour Waukesha County Technical College. He will then hold a roundtable on “workforce development.” He’ll also speak at a fundraiser for Gov. Scott Walker before returning to D.C.

NEW BUZZFEED INVESTIGATION (with six bylines) -- “POISON IN THE SYSTEM”: “The British government is suppressing explosive intelligence that Alexander Perepilichnyy, a financier who exposed a vast financial crime by Russian government officials, was likely assassinated on the direct orders of Vladimir Putin. Perepilichnyy, who faced repeated threats after fleeing to Britain, was found dead outside his home in Surrey after returning from a mysterious trip to Paris in 2012. Despite an expert detecting signs of a fatal plant poison in his stomach, the British police have insisted there was no evidence of foul play, and Theresa May’s government has invoked national security powers to withhold evidence from the inquest into his cause of death – which is ongoing. But an investigation by BuzzFeed News has now obtained fresh evidence that the authorities have deliberately sidelined, and has uncovered how Perepilichnyy spent his last days in Paris.” http://bzfd.it/2tfTF6z

Goldman’s Lloyd Blankfein and Citigroup’s Michael Corbat, as well as Citigroup consumer-banking chief Stephen Bird, responded over the weekend to emails sent by the anonymous prankster masquerading as top executives at the two banks.
